It’s the reveal day for the Haberdashery Blog Hop hosted by Melissa at BeadRecipies.
The challenge for this blog hop is to use haberdashery items like ribbons, buttons, trims and fabric scraps to create beautiful pieces of jewellery.
The first thing I did for this hop was to sift through the many jars of vintage and antique buttons I inherited from my hubby’s grandmother. I also pulled out some sari silk, gross grain ribbon and lace from my stash. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do until I searched Pinterest for inspiration and found a bracelet made from the cuff of a denim shirt.
I made a flower brooch from lace and felt, bent some copper wire (12 gauge, I think) and finished it with a gold filigree button. A cuff cut from an old 1970’s business shirt from the Salvo’s decorated with hand dyed lace from my stash, some sari silk and real shell mother-of-pearl buttons game me something to pin the brooch on to.
The final touch was something to fasten the cuff together and I found that in the jars of buttons. An old cufflink made from mother-of-pearl and embossed gold, its partner vanished long ago I suspect.
Next I wanted to make something with a piece of lace. I knew I had a lovely piece of satin embroidered lace somewhere in a box but I couldn’t find it. So, I tried something else instead. I used some DMC Cotton Perle thread to crochet lace myself.
I think I got a little too enthusiastic, I only wanted to crochet 10-15cm of lace. This ended up being princess length (45cm). I finished it off with some silver ribbon clamps, curb chain and lobster clasp. I thought it needed some bling and sewed crystal AB bicones to the tip of each shell.
I was going to try to make a necklace with some vintage wooden sewing thread spools but everything kept looking like rolls of toilet paper, lol. Hopefully some of the other participants conquered the sewing spool and I’ll get an idea of how its done! Please take some time to visit the other participants listed below.
